With online auctions, anyone can participate in the Hats & Heels fundraiser

Even those who cannot attend the Soroptimists Hats and Heels fundraiser can help the group help women and children.

The online auction will open on Friday April 15 at sihatsandheels.org. It will close at 1:15 p.m. on Sunday, April 24 during the event.

Corinne Campbell, a Soroptimist from North San Diego, said everyone — those in attendance April 24 at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar and those at home — will have to place bids online during the silent auction. This means everyone has an equal chance of getting the items they want the most.

“Items can be delivered anywhere in San Diego or postage if further afield,” said Campbell, who handles the technical aspects of the event, including social media and silent auctions.

Hats & Heels is the largest fundraiser the Poway and North San Diego Soroptimist International chapters hold together. Much of the proceeds go to support the transitional housing program they run together to help women and children who have fled domestic violence and are rebuilding their lives.

Poway Soroptimists President Linda England said their fundraising goal is $130,000.

The money will also go to many other philanthropic projects, including scholarships for female heads of households and a mentorship program for high school girls. Soroptimists also assist those who have escaped human trafficking situations.

Campbell, a Santa Fe Valley resident and Soroptimist for nine years, said she enjoyed many aspects of the event.

“I like silent and live auctions because I like to buy,” Campbell said. “I buy gifts for other people. I also love the buzz and the activity and I love how we’re here for a common cause. There’s a lot of camaraderie. »

Among the silent auction items are designer handbags from Brahmin, Michael Kors, Kate Spade and Coach. There is also a Pala Casino package, lots of children’s items such as a trolley full of toys and an art package. The “garage for guys” set includes a circular saw, wet/dry vacuum, hammer, gloves, safety glasses and other tools.

The online auction will also include a Fitbit, an Apple iPad, a week-long vacation to Maui, a getaway to Palm Springs, tickets to the La Jolla Playhouse, Botox treatments, a wine package, a tour of the I Heart Radio broadcast center in San Diego, paintings and a dress worn by The 5th Dimension singer Florence LaRue.

The singing group has been booked to entertain the expected 300 Hats & Heels attendees, according to organizers.

This will be the first time North San Diego Soroptimist Shelley Dugan has participated in person since joining the 2019 event and Hats & Heels held virtually for the past two years.

“I’ve heard so much about it and seen photos and videos,” said Dugan, who lives in Rancho Bernardo and is on the event committee. “To have it at the Fairmont, where we can come together and be in the same place to celebrate, that will be lovely.”

Dugan said she became a Soroptimist through the Transitional Housing Program.

“It drew me in for sure,” Dugan said. “He helps women create a better life for themselves and their children. It’s hard for them to get by… We help them move on and create a better life. I wanted to be part of it. »

The fundraiser has a 60s theme due to The 5th Dimension participating and attendees are encouraged to wear 60s clothing, as well as fancy hats or other hair accessories.

Tickets are only sold in advance. They cost $150 per person or $1,500 for a 10-seat table. sihatsandheels.org.
