US company Vantage opens R16 billion data center campus in Johannesburg

Vantage Data Centers, a leading US-based data center specialist, today announced the delivery of the first facility at its Johannesburg campus, as well as the start of construction of a second data center at its Frankfurt II campus .

Johannesburg Campus (JNB1)

Positioned in the largest data center market on the continent, Vantage has opened its first data center (JNB11) in Africa after leading the way in 2021.

The two-story facility offers 16 MW of critical computing capacity across 130,000 square feet (12,000 square meters). The project was delivered in 10 months, 10 days before the scheduled date, without any incident with work stoppage over 1.5 million working hours.

With an investment totaling over $1 billion or R16 billion, Vantage’s 30-acre (12-hectare) campus will include 80 MW of computing capacity and over 650,000 square feet (60,000 square meters) spread over three data centers once fully developed.

Located in Waterfall City, the campus complements the region’s thriving data center ecosystem and leverages its fiber optic connectivity to the rest of Africa. Additionally, the campus aligns with the company’s commitment to sustainability, providing renewable energy options, limiting carbon emissions, and maintaining energy-efficient operations with energy-use efficiency. industry-leading energy (PUE).

In June, Vantage announced that it had entered into a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with SolarAfrica to support the generation of 87 MWp of renewable energy to supplement the local grid that powers the campus.

Frankfurt Campus II (FRA2)

In addition to its existing presence in Europe’s most desirable market, Vantage has inaugurated a second facility (FRA22) at its second campus in Frankfurt. The 16 MW, 130,000 square foot (12,000 square meter) facility is located on seven acres (three hectares) in Raunheim. When fully developed, the campus will include 56 MW of computing capacity spread across two data centers.

Vantage is also continuing the development of its first 55 MW campus in Frankfurt, located in Offenbach, approximately 30 kilometers from Raunheim. When fully developed, the two campuses will offer customers a total of 111 MW of computing capacity in the Frankfurt area.
