Calgary- For the first time since 2019, an exciting night of bidding ended with a final hammer blow and over $2.1 million was raised to support the iconic sport of Chuckwagon Racing, in 2022 Calgary Stampede Canvas Auctions. With racing returning to the Stampede in July, the opportunity to become a web advertiser is an experience dozens of businesses and groups simply couldn’t pass up. The Stampede also announced a multi-year title sponsorship deal with the Cowboys, introducing the new Cowboys Rangeland Derby.

“The Stampede is thrilled with the return of Chuckwagon Racing in 2022, and clearly our community is too,” said Steve McDonough, President and Chairman of the Board, Calgary Stampede. “The support we’ve received from our new title sponsor, the Cowboys, and through bidding at the Canvas Auction shows just how popular Chuckwagon Racing remains, as well as the value placed on its cultural, historical and athletic.”

The evening allowed businesses and groups to partner up and financially support 27 drivers through an exciting live auction format. For the first time, an online auction followed, giving successful bidders the opportunity to sell individual nights of accommodation and advertising, providing even more options for organizations to be part of this valuable and unique experience. “You can’t have this experience any other way. It’s truly one of a kind and an amazing way to come together again,” said McDonough, adding, “We are thrilled with the outcome of the auction and the support it will provide to the pilots invited to compete in July. “

The support Chuckwagon riders receive through the Canvas Auction is essential to sustaining their teams at the Calgary Stampede and throughout the racing season. Kurt Bensmiller won the best bid of the night, with an impressive final bid of $185,000 from Versatile Energy.

“After two years of no racing at the Calgary Stampede, it was fantastic to receive such a high bid – it was the highest bid I’ve ever received,” Bensmiller said. “All the drivers are thrilled to be back at the Stampede. The feeling is inexplicable – it’s Chuckwagon Racing here.
