A significant number of significant and deeply personal works from Gene and Brian Sherman’s contemporary art collection will soon be available at the upcoming auction – SHERMAN | 100.

One of Australia’s most respected philanthropists and art collectors, Gene Sherman, together with his beloved husband Brian, has passionately and artfully collected some 900 pieces by significant Australian, Asian and international artists.

The Shermans have generously donated many large scale works of art to many cultural institutions including MOMA in New York, TATE Modern in London, Art Gallery of NSW, National Gallery of Australia, Chau Chak Wing Museum from the University of Sydney, the University of Melbourne and several regions. galleries. The SHERMAN | The 100 sale is a carefully curated selection of mostly intimate works that cluster around the often monumental pieces remaining in the Family Foundation and, through past and ongoing donations, held in important public collections.

“It has been a profound joy to have developed lasting friendships with so many wonderful creative practitioners,” Gene said. “Now is the time to edit and reduce our vast collection to a basic, museum-scale work – simplifying our lifelong collecting efforts and setting the stage for future generations.”

Auction highlights include a bust of Ah Xian titled Chine China, a photograph by Shaun Gladwell titled Slowburn and Calligraphy, and a work by Tim Storrier titled The Carcass, which is expected to fetch between $80,000 and $120,000. .

“The Sherman Collection has accumulated over a lifetime with a complex and multi-dimensional connection to many acclaimed artists,” said Bonhams Australia Director Merryn Schriever. “The Shermans are renowned for collecting the work of key artists in depth, and often from the earliest stages of an artist’s development. For example, the Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation (SCAF, 2008-2017) presented Ai Weiwei’s first-ever major solo exhibition, and Gene recognized Shaun Gladwell’s prodigious talent in art school and supported and acquired the work of the artist throughout his career.
