Potionomics is the latest witch shop sim to catch our attention

Potionomics seems to contain several things that I would like from a video game. There are brewing potions, yes, that’s fine. There is trade, I really like that. Then there’s a card-based social system for haggling with customers – perfect. Recipear meets Potion Craft meets Signs Of The Sojourner? With a nice character animation? Gold.

Watch its new trailer below.

We’ve written about Potionomics several times before, with a first look at his character art in 2019 and a first trailer in 2020. There’s more to it than I mentioned above, though, given which you can also hire heroes, customize your store and have sex with other sellers.

It’s the haggling system that interests me the most. It looks like you collect cards from adventurers you befriend in town, with each character having a set of cards you can choose from. Characters have names like “Planting the Seed” and “Shock Factor”, and when played will impact your customer’s interest in your wares. Dropping the “Jingle” card in the card above causes Sylvia, the protagonist, to sing a little ditty about the tonic she’s trying to sell. Delicious.

I can’t deny that art is also part of the appeal. The characters are 3D and cartoony – a bit Disney, a bit Overwatch-y – but the 2D art for mixing potions and the isometric cut of your shop are also warm and inviting. Even though I like Recipear, Potion Craft and Sojourner, none of them enough I’ve scratched an itch for this kind of game, so I can’t wait for Potionomics to give it a shot. It is on Steam if you want to see more.

Potionomics is aiming for a release sometime later in 2022 and this trailer was released to coincide with its appearance at PAX. If you want more coverage of the current show, Katharine and Liam bring you daily videos from the showfloor exclusively for fans.
