The Firm Foundation Christian School of Battle Ground will hold its annual rummage sale July 21-23 to raise funds for the eighth graders’ trip to Washington, DC next year.

This is the first time that organizer and parent Danielle Olson will lead the sale. Olson said people can bring donations for sale to school starting Monday, July 18.

“We’re going to have clothes, electronics, toys, books,” Olson said. “It’s just a big sellout and the school used to do that before COVID. They would do this every year to support eighth graders going on a trip to Washington, DC.

The children will spend seven nights during the trip. They plan to visit the Jamestown Colony in Virginia, Mount Vernon, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Museum of the Bible, the Smithsonian, and possibly visit the White House as well.

Olson said past dig sales have been deemed successful, but the school hasn’t held one in two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We expect to have a lot of traffic this year, a lot of donated items. We hope to break our record (of $15,000),” Olson said.

She noted that some of the children were fundraising for the trip on their own. His son, Ryder, raised $310 mowing lawns.

“That’s about 10% of what he needs, but he’s still learning how to mow lawns,” Olson said with a laugh.

The rummage sale will also include furniture, but Olson noted they cannot accept cribs or car seats. They also cannot accept CRT or projection televisions.

Olson said clothing is one of the best sellers in the sale, along with household items, art supplies and tools.

“It’s open to anything anyone can donate,” she said.

Besides the clearance sale, Olson said there will be other fundraising events for the trip.

“During the school year, we will have parent nights where they can bring their children to school and we will have the eighth graders, and the parent chaperones will be there as well,” she said. “We will be having movie nights and game nights just so parents can hang out. We hope to do this at least once a month until February.

In January, Olson said the school plans to have a mother-son dinner, and then in February there will be the father-daughter dinner.

“We haven’t decided on the themes for these yet, but these are planned,” she said.

Each student must raise $3,000 for their trip to Washington, D.C. This will cover everything from airfare to hotels, as well as tickets to the various places they plan to visit, Olson said.

“It’s an all-inclusive price,” she said.

The trip to Washington, DC is scheduled for March 2023.

The clearance sale will take place at the Firm Foundation Christian School, 1919 SW 25th Way, Battle Ground. The sale will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 21 and 22, as well as from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on July 23.
